Las Brisas Energy Center plans to open in 2014. Las Brisas will be allowed to release 21,166 tons of pollution per year! Data from the Texas Medicaid program shows that children in Corpus Christi are already twice as likely to require emergency care for asthma as children in the rest of Texas, so this really looks like that can hurt them.
Las Brisas is expected to be the #1 in releasing particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and global warming gases. Corpus Christi is already very close to violating federal smog limits. If permitted this plant would add so much pollution that citizens could have to do costly smog checks on their car and businesses may have to add expensive pollution controls. In addition, it would add 220 lbs a year of toxic mercury to our already polluted bay making more kinds of fish unsafe to eat.
